First Steps: Setting Up Your Farm Portions and Fields in the TerraClim Web App 3.0

Setting up your farm portions in the TerraClim WebApp is quick, simple and only needs to be done once. With real-time feedback and intuitive selection tools, users can identify and select their farm portions effortlessly during the initial setup process. This is a crucial step to ensure accurate statistics and insights are displayed in the Overview Tab.

It’s important to select all relevant farm portions during the first setup, as edits to these portions aren’t currently available in the app. If you acquire new portions in the future, don’t worry—just reach out to us via email at hello@terraclim.co.za and we’ll incorporate the updates for you.

Fields, however, can be created and adjusted at your own pace, one at a time, as your operational needs change. This flexibility allows for precise management and tracking of specific areas within your farm. More on that when we get to field creation. 

Option A – Single Farm Portion Selection:

  1. Step 1: Pan around the interface to locate your farm.
  2. Step 2: Click to select the portion that represents your farm.
  3. Step 3: Once highlighted, click Next to begin entering your information.

Tip: If using a reference image, open it in another tab to confirm your selection.

Option B – Multiple Adjacent Farm Portions:

  1. Step 1: Locate your farm area on the map.
  2. Step 2: Click and select multiple adjacent portions to cover your entire farm.
  3. Step 3: Confirm the total area and click Next to continue.

Option C – Selecting Multiple Farm Portions Across the Extent:

  1. Step 1: Use the search function to locate each of your farm portions.
  2. Step 2: Select each portion one by one until all relevant areas are highlighted.
  3. Step 3: Review your selection and click Next to proceed.

Reminder: Functionality may be limited due to the widespread nature of non-adjacent portions.

Why do I need to select all my farm portions during the initial setup?

Selecting all your farm portions during the initial setup ensures that the TerraClim WebApp provides accurate statistics and insights across your entire farm. This allows for consistent tracking and reporting in the Overview Tab. Since editing farm portions after initial setup isn’t currently available, it’s important to get it right the first time.

At this time, farm portion selection is finalised after the initial setup to ensure data consistency. If you need to make adjustments or add new farm portions due to acquisitions, please reach out to us directly at hello@terraclim.co.za and we’ll be happy to assist you. However, fields can be created, edited, deleted or moved at any time. This flexibility allows you to adapt your field management based on changes in your operations, helping you maintain precise control over your farm’s data.

Farm portions are the broad areas of your farm defined during the initial setup and provide high-level insights. Fields, on the other hand, are smaller, user-defined sections within your farm portions that you can create and manage at your own pace, one by one.

If you have a reference image of your farm portions, open it in another browser tab for easy comparison. This will help you accurately select and confirm your farm boundaries within the TerraClim WebApp.

Completing the farm portion setup in one go ensures all data is correctly aligned and your farm’s boundaries are accurately represented. This is crucial for generating accurate insights in the Overview Tab, as incomplete data can impact your statistics and reporting.

Creating a field takes less than 2 minutes:

Now that you’ve set up your farm portions, it’s time to create and manage fields. Fields are essential for tracking specific areas on your farm, gathering insights and maintaining an accurate overview. This video will guide you through the simple steps to create a field in real-time using the drawing tool. Let’s get started!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Step 1: From the Dashboard, click on “Add Field” in the left-hand menu.
  2. Step 2: Navigate to the farm portion where you want to create the field.
  3. Step 3: Use the drawing tool to create a polygon that represents your field. You can adjust the polygon as you go by adding or removing nodes or modifying the shape.
  4. Step 4: Once you’re satisfied with the field shape, give it a name.
  5. Step 5: Select the crop or cultivar from the drop-down. If the cultivar is missing, you can type it in and save it.
  6. Step 6: Review your selections and click “Save” to finalise the field creation.
  7. Step 7: Now that your field is created, you can return anytime to adjust or add more fields as needed.

Tip: For accurate hectare readings, spend a little extra time adjusting your polygons to reflect the exact boundaries of your field.

Getting to Know the TerraClim Overview Tab

The Overview Tab in the TerraClim Web App is your go-to section for farm- and field-level insights. After setting up your fields, this is where you’ll find the big-picture data for your farm. Whether you want a general overview or detailed information about each field, the Overview Tab helps you access important statistics quickly and efficiently.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Step 1: After creating your fields, navigate to the Overview Tab, the first of three tools within the TerraClim Web App.
  2. Step 2: At the farm level, you’ll see summary statistics such as:
    • Total hectares and number of fields.
    • Average aspect, distance to coast, seasonal temperature, wind speed and rainfall.
    • Key attributes like cultivar distribution displayed in pie charts.
  3. Step 3: To dive deeper, select a specific field from the list in the pane on the left hand side of the screen. When you select a field, the insights will adjust to show specific stats for that field, such as:
    • Elevation, wind speed and other field-specific variations.
  4. Step 4: Scroll through the insights and compare different fields to identify variations (e.g., wind speed differences due to elevation).
Can I see insights for individual fields as well as the entire farm?

Yes, the Overview Tab shows farm-level insights by default. When you select a specific field, the data will automatically adjust to show field-level insights.

The Overview Tab includes data on total hectares, field counts, average seasonal temperature, wind speed, rainfall, elevation, and more. You can also view crop and cultivar distribution in easy-to-read charts.

The data is sourced from accurate climate models and real-time information from your farm’s location. The more detailed your field setup, the more accurate the data will be for decision-making.

 

While the default insights cover key metrics, if you’d like to see additional data or have specific requirements, feel free to reach out to us for assistance or suggestions.

Exploring Your Data in the TerraClim Web App

The Explore Tab offers powerful, spatialised tools for diving into your farm data using different layers like terrain, climate and bioclimate insights. Whether you’re analysing water flow, terrain wetness, or wind patterns, this feature enables you to visualise data critical to optimising your operations.

In this section, we’ve provided two helpful videos to guide you through the Explore Tab’s navigation and how to use the various data layers effectively.
Step 1: After creating your fields, they will appear in the left-hand side panel. Navigate between fields by selecting their names from the list.
Step 2: Use the Home button to quickly return to your farm’s center location after navigating around the map.
Step 3: Open the Settings menu to toggle topographical settings, adjust map views, and customise the layers for better clarity.
Step 4: Explore the various Terrain, Climate, Bioclimate and Remote Sensing layers to get insights into your farm’s conditions.
Step 5: Adjust the Layer Settings and legends on the right-hand side to visualise the data in a way that fits your needs. For example, you can toggle Water Bodies on or off to avoid confusion when viewing terrain features like flow direction or wetness.
Step 6: Examine important layers like Flow Accumulation and Terrain Wetness Index to see where water collects and how this impacts the vegetative index and field performance.

What types of data can I explore in the Explore Tab?

The Explore Tab offers Terrain data (e.g., elevation, slope), Climate data (e.g., temperature, rainfall), Bioclimate data, and Remote Sensing layers, all aimed at providing insights about your farm’s environment.

Yes, through the Settings menu, you can toggle specific layers like Water Bodies, Terrain Wetness, or Flow Accumulation to tailor the map view to your specific needs.

Simply click the Home button, and the map will snap back to your farm’s center point for easy reference.

 

Use the Split Screen function to compare data side by side, such as comparing temperature readings or rainfall data from different years. This allows you to track changes and identify trends over time.

By clicking on any location within the Explore Tab, you can see the exact data for that point, such as precise temperature, rainfall or wind speed. This is useful for analysing specific areas within your farm.

The Climate layers are updated daily, ensuring that you have access to the latest data. You can also view Monthly and Long-Term layers to compare seasonal or historical trends.

 

Yes, through the Settings menu, you can toggle different layers on or off. For example, you can choose to display only the Terrain Wetness Index and Water Bodies to get a better understanding of water flow on your farm.

The Analysis Tab: Your Environmental Profile Comparison Tool

In the Analysis Tab, you can explore and compare 44 different environmental variables at the field level to get a comprehensive understanding of the conditions affecting your farm. This powerful tool allows you to visualize data variations, compare fields, and make informed decisions based on real-time insights.

Step-by-Step Guide: Using the Analysis Tab

Step 1: Select Your Fields
Once in the Analysis Tab, select a field from the list on the left-hand side. This field will be represented by dots on the comparison chart.

Step 2: Compare Variables
Scroll through the 44 available variables. Each variable is represented by a  line. The further apart the dots on the line, the greater the variation between the fields for that specific variable. Hover over any line to see the exact variable and its value for the selected field.

Step 3: Add Additional Fields
To compare more fields, simply select another one. You will see a new dot appear on each line, giving you a comparison of the selected fields’ environmental profiles.

Step 4: Analyse the Data
By selecting multiple fields, you can create a detailed environmental profile comparison. Use the hover feature to check the values for each variable, field by field. This will allow you to easily spot areas of similarity or variation across your farm.

Step 5: Deselect Fields
If you wish to focus on fewer fields, deselect any of them by clicking on the field’s name. The data for that field will be removed from the chart automatically.

What environmental variables are available in the Analysis Tab?

The Analysis Tab offers 44 different variables, including temperature, wind speed, rainfall, elevation, aspect, and more. These variables help you understand the unique environmental conditions of each field and allow for easy comparison between fields.

The chart compares the selected fields for each variable. Each field is represented by dots along a line corresponding to that variable. The distance between the dots indicates how much the fields vary for that specific environmental factor.

Yes, you can compare as many fields as you like. Simply select multiple fields, and the system will display dots for each field along the variable lines.

Currently, downloading data directly from the Analysis Tab is not supported. If downloading this specific data becomes a priority for your workflow, please reach out and we’ll consider adding this feature in future updates.

What is the TerraClim Web App?

TerraClim is a climate-focused web app designed to provide detailed environmental insights and analysis for farms. It allows users to map fields, track climatic data and generate insights based on various weather and agricultural variables.

During the initial setup, you’ll be able to select the portions of land that make up your farm. This only needs to be done once, and we encourage you to select all portions at the start to ensure accurate data analysis.

Welcome to TerraClim, where we strive to provide industry-leading climate data for South African agriculture. This Data Policy serves as an assurance of our commitment to data quality and client satisfaction, as well as an indemnity statement for users of the TerraClim WebApp.

1. Data Quality and Source Integrity

TerraClim clients access information from the TerraClim Central Climate Database, the most comprehensive climate database in South Africa, featuring over 30 years of validated climate data. This dataset has been meticulously compiled and aggregated from multiple open and proprietary sources, ensuring that the data is reliable, scientifically sound, and suitable for farm-level decision-making.

Our data is processed daily in collaboration with the Centre for Geographic Analysis (CGA) at the University of Stellenbosch. Each climate layer is verified by data scientists, who use state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to gap-fill and cross-check outputs. Manual reviews are conducted to ensure high data accuracy and completeness. This multi-layered approach sets us apart from competitors who often rely exclusively on satellite or remote sensing data, which can be less precise due to cloud cover, spatial resolution limitations, or time lags

2. Liability and Usage Disclaimer

Although we strive for the highest standards of data integrity and accuracy, TerraClim cannot be held liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from the use of our data. Clients acknowledge that our climate data is intended to support, but not replace, their own observations and expert consultations. Unexpected environmental events and natural variability may result in discrepancies, and TerraClim disclaims responsibility for any financial or operational losses resulting from data interpretation or decision-making based on our reports

3. Intellectual Property and Usage Rights

Each TerraClim profile and its associated data are intended for use solely by the individual or organisation that has processed the payment. Unauthorised sharing, redistribution, or reproduction of TerraClim data without express permission is prohibited. All data and images sourced from the TerraClim WebApp must be credited appropriately using the following format:

4. Privacy and Data Security

TerraClim takes client data privacy and security seriously. We only collect the necessary information to set up user profiles and improve the platform continuously.
